On The Point Sustainability
At On The Point – Lake Rotorua, we are deeply committed to fostering a sustainable environment.
Our dedication is evident in every aspect of our daily operations, ensuring that we maintain the highest guest experience and operational standards without compromise. As proud members of the Rotorua Sustainable Charter, we invite you, our valued guests, to join us in preserving this beautiful and unique part of the world in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our sustainable New Zealand accommodation reflects this commitment, incorporating eco-friendly practices and promoting environmental stewardship throughout your stay.
Your Role in Sustainability
Manaakitanga is a concept that embodies a feeling, an invitation, and a responsibility to our guests and our local communities. Kaitiakitanga signifies the duty of the people of Rotorua to protect and cherish our natural resources, and we extend an invitation to our visitors (manuhiri) to participate in this guardianship.
As manuhiri to Rotorua, we hope you will embrace manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga, and contribute to the sustainability of our destination. By doing so, you help us achieve the following goals:
Conserve the natural and human environment.
Promote the efficient use of resources.
Comply with environmental legislation.
Ensure the well-being of the local community and tangata whenua (people of the land).
Respect and integrate our rich cultural heritage into our operations.
Provide a safe, enjoyable, and informative experience for visitors.

Our Sustainable Practices
At On The Point – Lake Rotorua, we are dedicated to environmental sustainability through various initiatives and practices:
Recycling Waste: We actively sort and recycle waste, aiming to reduce landfill contributions and unnecessary packaging.
Paper Usage: We minimise and recycle paper to reduce our ecological impact.
Reducing Plastic: In an attempt to reduce plastic, we changed our laundry bag and pillow covers to cotton bags
Energy Management Plan: We have implemented an energy management plan to monitor and reduce electricity use.
Energy Efficiency: We are continuously replacing light bulbs with energy-saving alternatives.
Sustainable Transport: We provide EV chargers on site for our guests with electric vehicles and actively try to minimise vehicle use in our own operations.
Organic Food: We source and serve organic food, using produce from our kitchen gardens whenever possible.
Linen Policy: Guest sheets are changed every third day to save water and energy, with daily changes upon request.
Eco-friendly Cleaning Products: We use biodegradable and eco-friendly cleaning products to reduce chemical impact on the environment.
Local Employment: We prioritize employing local staff to support the community and reduce commuting emissions.
Community Engagement: We actively contribute to community events and support local initiatives.
Staff Training: All new staff members are educated on our sustainable practices to ensure consistency.
Kaitiaki: A kaitiaki is a guardian, and the process and practices of protecting and looking after the environment are referred to as Kaitiakitanga. On the Point – Lake Rotorua is a significant cultural site, and we weave the storytelling into our guest experience, open our doors to the community to learn more about the history of the grounds. We also take care of the riparian grounds by cleaning up the lake edge.
Your Contribution
We believe that every guest can make a difference when it comes to climate change. Here are a few simple ways you can have a positive impact during your stay:
Recycle and Dispose Responsibly: Use recycling bins provided in your room and around the property.
Conserve Water and Energy: Turn off lights, air conditioning, and water taps when not in use.
Support Local: Choose to dine at local restaurants, buy local products, and participate in community events.
Respect Nature: Follow guidelines for interacting with local wildlife and natural habitats.
Our Sustainable Procurement Values
At On The Point – Lake Rotorua we are committed to ensuring our site and the wider natural environment is looked after and treated with respect for future generations to enjoy. Without compromising the guest experience or operational standards, we strive to run our business as sustainably as possible.
We recognise that Sustainable Procurement is a key component to achieving these goals. When making purchasing decisions, we will consider the following where feasible.
Geographic Location: Buy local, then regional, then national, then Oceania, then Rest of World.
Like-minded Suppliers: Work with ethical suppliers and businesses, committed to their own sustainability journey.
Product Design: Think about the end-of-life options and/or ease of recyclability of products we purchase and make better choices if possible.
Packaging: Aim to buy products with minimal packaging or in reusable/returnable containers. Work with suppliers to encourage them to consider more sustainable packaging options.
Product efficiency: Aim to buy products with high energy efficiency or water saving ratings.
Re-Use & Re-Purpose: Consider buying refurbished products (e.g. electronics) or re-use/re-purpose products we already own (We will always aim to donate unwanted goods, rather than send them to landfill).
Green Washing: Be mindful of ‘green claims’ and seek verification. It is important to consider the impact of a product across its whole Life-Cycle.
